Council earns prestigious Tpas accreditation for tenant engagement

Tpas award

Gateshead Council is proud to announce that it has been awarded accreditation from Tpas, the country's leading tenant engagement experts. This prestigious recognition clearly demonstrates the council's ongoing commitment to involving tenants in shaping and improving housing services.

The accreditation follows a rigorous, independent assessment process that evaluated the council's tenant engagement approach against clear national standards. The review included desktop assessments, staff interviews, tenant meetings, employee surveys, and observations of engagement in action.

Assessors from Tpas found that Gateshead Council demonstrates best practice in several key areas, including:

  • Tenant Scrutiny: Ensuring tenants play a direct role in scrutinising housing services, including reviewing complaints, deciding what to scrutinise, and participating in scrutiny reviews
  • Multi Storey Group: Developing building safety engagement strategies for every multi-storey block and running a successful customer inspection programme
  • Community Engagement: A proactive approach to meeting residents in their communities, listening to their concerns, and acting on feedback
  • Service Redesign: Actively involving tenants in shaping housing services to better meet their needs.

The accreditation, which lasts for three years, provides assurance to tenants that their voices are valued and acted upon. It also reflects the council's commitment to continuous improvement and delivering outstanding resident engagement.

Councillor Leigh Kirton, Portfolio Support for Housing at Gateshead Council, said:

"This accreditation is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the hard work of our teams and tenants in making sure resident voices help shape our services. We are committed to delivering high-quality housing services that truly reflect the needs of our communities, and this recognition from Tpas reinforces our dedication to meaningful engagement."

Dale Owens, Chief Executive of Gateshead Council, added:

"We are incredibly proud to receive this accreditation from Tpas. Tenant engagement is at the heart of what we do, and this award demonstrates that our approach is both effective and impactful. We will continue to listen, learn, and improve to ensure our housing services meet the highest standards."

Gillian McLaren, National Consultancy Manager at Tpas, said:

"Gateshead Council has shown a strong commitment to tenant engagement, embedding best practice across its housing services. Their approach to scrutiny, community engagement, and service redesign demonstrates a real willingness to listen and act on resident feedback. We're delighted to award them Tpas accreditation and look forward to seeing their continued progress in the coming years."
