Fairtrade Town

Fairtrade Town
 Gateshead's Fairtrade Town Status

Gateshead has renewed Fairtrade Town Status until 2020 as we commit to promoting Fairtrade.

Gateshead was first given Fairtrade Town (opens new window) status in 2007.

To be a Fairtrade Town, the community of Gateshead has been working together to achieve the five goals set by the Fairtrade Foundation:

  1. Council - Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade products (for example, in meetings, offices and canteens
  2. Commerce (retail and catering) - A range of (at least four) Fairtrade products are readily available in the area's retail outlets (shops, supermarkets, newsagents, petrol stations) and served in local catering outlets (café's, restaurants, pubs)
  3. Community - Local workplaces and community organisations (places of worship, schools, universities, colleges and other community organisations) support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products whenever possible
  4. Common Consensus - Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community
  5. Captains - A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure the Fairtrade Town campaign continues to develop and gain new support.
