Overview
We are responsible for removing dead animals from most roads, highways and public spaces in Gateshead. We also offer a service to remove dead animals from your home free of charge.
We do not
- deal with dead animals on motorways
- remove farm animals such as cows, sheep or pigs
- remove horses
- collect small animals, such as rats and birds
If you see a dead animal on a motorway, such as the A1 or A194(M), you should contact National Highways on 0300 123 5000.
If you see a dead farm animal, you should contact DEFRA (opens new window). If needed, you can report it to us and we will try our best to get in touch with them.
Removing a dead animal from a path or road
As long as the dead animal is not a farm animal or on a motorway, we will remove it as soon as operationally possible.
In an emergency, we need to remove the animal as quickly and safely as possible. This will be no longer than one working day.
