Nocturnal Landscape
Keith Grant's 'Nocturnal Landscape' enjoys a special place in the Borough's Public Art Programme.

Installed in 1982 as part of the Art in the Metro scheme, they were the first public artworks in Gateshead and paved the way for an ambitious range of specially commissioned public art.

The Noctural Landscape mosaic in the main concourse area features snowy peaks lit by the moon and sparkling with reflected light. Reminiscent of a Norwegian scene, the composition is actually based on prints by the Japanese artist Kunisada, bringing together allusions to the region's historical connections with Norway, and its more recent links with Japan.

Over the platforms, the two Night and Day mosaics show a single mountain summit looming out of darkness, and surrounded by billowing clouds - symbolising the continuous operation of the transport system.

All three mosaics were unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth II as part of the official opening of the Metro system.
