It was to take five years before the Gateshead Millennium Bridge was complete and the public could finally walk over this amazing example of cutting edge engineering.
August 1996 | Design competition launched |
February 1997 | Winning design announced. Detailed design work begins |
May 1999 | Construction work begins |
November 2000 | Asian Hercules transports bridge 6 miles from Wallsend |
June 2001 | Opening mechanism used for the first time |
September 2001 | Bridge opens to public |
May 2002 | The Queen officially opens Gateshead Millennium Bridge |
