Sea Piece & Ice Flows
Sea Piece is a stained glass screen made by Mike Davis and Cate Watkinson for refurbishments in the Out Patients Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The screen (2 x 6 metres) consists of six illuminated panels assembled from leaded glass sections fabricated at Mike Davis's Durham studio.
Imparting a sense of relaxation to the waiting area, the screen's cool colours and undulating forms evoke rolling waves, sea swells and fronds of seaweed.
The qualities of the glass itself correspond to the sea's changing appearance - opaque, translucent, reflective - and its textural variations suggest rippled and swirling water.
