Felling town centre masterplan

In April 2017 we were awarded grant funding by the government as part of the Estate Renewal Funding Programme. The grant will be used to help support the development of regeneration proposals for the centre. The Felling Town Centre Masterplan forms part of this.

We appointed consultants, WYG, a multi-disciplinary design consultancy, in partnership with Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH), to undertake the masterplan. Since appointment the team have surveyed Felling town centre and the homes within. These are:

  • St Oswald's Court (Karbon Homes),
  • Crowhall Towers (Gateshead Council),
  • Sir Godfrey Thomson Court (Gateshead Council), alongside the Felling Community Centre and the Greyhound Public House.

This survey work is now complete. We shared the results at a series of recent engagement events.

Engagement to date

Community drop-in exhibition - options

We held a two day community drop-in exhibition at Felling Community Centre.

During these two days we asked for feedback about the exhibition. The feedback from the exhibition and those provided via the online form will help shape the masterplan and future recommendations.

We sought opinions to which approach was preferred. This was for refurbishment and rebuild of homes and also proposals for the town centre.

The feedback suggests that the preferred option was split between major refurbishment and new build.

It was also clear from the feedback that residents within the town centre felt the green space within the town centre was important.

Concerns were raised about ideas to develop land adjacent to the public green space.

This feedback will inform the draft masterplan proposals and these ideas will go forward to the next stage.

The exhibition boards (PDF, 7 MB)(opens new window) were on display at the event.

Resident / community workshops - options

We held two workshops for residents within the homes of St Oswald's Court, Crowhall Towers and Sir Godfrey Thomson Cour. We also invited local organisations, groups and business within the town centre.

Community drop-in exhibition - project introduction

During early November 2017 a drop-in exhibition took place at Felling Community Centre. The event was open to all and was an opportunity to find out more about the masterplan and how it will be developed.
Comments were invited around five themes:

  • Homes and neighbourhood,
  • Town centre,
  • Neighbourhood spaces,
  • Streets,
  • Community

The feedback from the session was helpful in understanding the issues that residents and town centre users face every day.

Next steps

WYG are now reviewing feedback. They will recommend an option based on this and develop a masterplan for us and Karbon Homes to consider.

Further engagement sessions will take place once we have the recommendation.

Keep checking this page as we will be sharing updates as the project progresses.
